MacqLit and MiniLit Program

MacqLit

Taranganba State School implements the MacqLit intervention​ program in years 3, 4, 5 and 6. MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Who is it for?

  • Ideal for students who fall in the bottom 25% of a standardised reading test or curriculum-based measure, and who have particular difficulties in the area of word recognition.
  • Specifically aimed at struggling readers in Year 3 through to high school.

Delivery

  • Small group program for use in schools.
  • Delivered by teachers, learning support teachers, special educators, and well-trained and well-supported teacher aides.
  • Each lesson is designed to be completed in one hour blocks delivered at least four times a week.
  • Students also require opportunities to practice their skills by reading one-on-one with an adult for 20 minutes daily
​MiniLit:
TSS also implements MiniLit as a Tier 2 intervention in the early years. MiniLit is an evidence-based, explicit and effective early literacy intervention program for teaching reading skills to children who are lower than expected range for their age group in Year 1 or 2. MiniLit is a Tier 2 small group program (up to four students per group) within a Response to Intervention framework, but it can also be used on a one-to-one basis.

Who is it for?

  • Specifically aimed at struggling Year 1 and year 2 readers

Delivery

  • MiniLit should be delivered 4-5 times per week
  • The program can be delivered by teachers, engagement teachers, teacher aides 
  • Each lesson is designed to be delivered to small groups of up to four students, but it can also be used on a one-to-one basis.
